His Royal Highness Al Sultan Almu’tasimu Billahi Muhibuddin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah was born on 28 November 1927 at Istana Anak Bukit (Anak Bukit Palace), Alor Star. His Royal Highness started his schooling at the Alor Merah Malay Primary School and Titi Gajah Malay School before furthering his education at Sultan Abdul Hamid College (SAHC), where he remained until the end of 1948. His Royal Highness, together with his younger brother, His Highness Tunku Abdul Malik, resided in the school hostel together with other students for more than two years (1946- 1948). While in the hostel, His Royal Highness mixed with other students who came from all classes of society and different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Even though he was the son of a Sultan and would one day succeed to the throne, he never took advantage of his high position and was always friendly with other students. In fact, his teachers and school mates described His Royal Highness and Tunku Abdul Malik as a highly courteous and humble young man.

His Royal Highness was also an active student. He was a member of the college’s Geography Club, a hostel prefect and also a school prefect.

In February 1949, soon after leaving Sultan Abdul Hamid College, His Royal Highness departed to United Kingdom to further his studies. After finishing a short preparatory course, His Royal Highness was accepted into the alma mater of his father, Wadham College, Oxford University, in 1952. His Royal Highness spent two and a half years undergoing a Diploma and Degree course in Social Studies and Public Administration.

On 6 August 1949, while he was still studying in United Kingdom, His Royal Highness was proclaimed the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Kedah. Upon his return to Kedah in 1955, His Royal Highness served the state goverment as a Cadet Officer at the Kota Setar District Officer. His Royal Highness later served the State Treasury in 1957.

His Royal Highness then met his life partner, the late Her Royal Highness Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah in March 1956 at Istana Sri Menanti, Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus. The late Tuanku Sultanah was the eldest princess of the Yang diPertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Abdul Rahman Muhammad, and Tunku Ampuan Besar Negeri Sembilan, Tunku Kurshiah, who later became the first Yang diPertuan Agong (King) of the Federation of Malaya later Malaysia. The Royal marriage was blessed with three princesses, Her Highness Tunku Soraya, Her Highness Tunku Sarina (deceased) and Her Highness Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz.

On 9 March 1957, His Royal Highness was appointed as the Acting Sultan or The Regent of Kedah when His Royal Highness Sultan Badlishah went overseas from12 March until July 1957.

His Royal Highness then ascended the Kedah throne on July 1958 upon the demise of His Royal Highness Sultan Badlishah.

On 15 July 1958, His Royal Highness was officially installed as the 28th Sultan of Kedah and the late Her Royal Highness Tuanku Bahiyah as the Sultanah in a royal ceremony steeped in tradition with great pomp and pageantry at Balai Besar (The Grand Hall) in Alor Star.

His Royal Highness is the fourth Sultan of Kedah to have ascended to the throne for over 50 years. The previous rulers who ruled for over 50 years were Sultan Ataullah Muhammad Shah (1423-1473), the 8th Sultan; Sultan Zainal Adilin Mu’azam Shah II (1710-1778), the 19th Sultan; and Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah (1882-1943), the 26th Sultan.

His Royal Highness was conferred as the 5th, Ruler of Malaysia, Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong between 1970 and 1975. On 21 September 1970, His Royal Highness and the late Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah were officially proclaimed the Yang DiPertuan Agong (King) and Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) repectively. The younger brother of His Royal Highness, Tunku Abdul Malik (At first Tunku Bendahara and later Raja Muda) was then appointed the Regent of Kedah. It was also at this time that the uncle of His Royal Highness, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj who had served as the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, retired from this office.

As an extremely courteous prince, His Royal Highness is renowned for his refined and well-mannered disposition. His Royal Highness is a ruler who has been groomed from young on noble values and the importance of virtuous character based on religious principles and the pursuit of a well-rounded education. His Royal Highness is also very focused on the well-being of his subjects especially across the areas of education, religion and health.

His Royal Highness also has a very deep sense of duty and commitment to his predestined role and responsibility to serve this country. In his roles as the Sultan of Kedah since 1958, Timbalan Yang DiPertuan Agong, SPB Yang DiPertuan Agong from 1970/75, as Kol Yang Dipertua Kor Peninjau (Amour) from 1966/1970, Kor Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) (from 1975 uptill now) and Kor Perkhidmatan DiRaja (from 2004 uptill now) his commitment to these responsibilities is unflagging and unquestionable. He is a constant symbol for our country and for Kedah. HRH Tuanku Sultan and Tuanku Sultanah attend over 300 events a year, this is itself is a remarkable schedule.

His Royal Highness’s conscientiousness is evident in his daily schedule to his office at Wisma Darul Aman, Alor Star, which is the administrative centre of Kedah Darul Aman. His Royal Highness has always had close ties with the government and administrators to encourage an efficient system of government. His Royal Highness has weekly discussions with the Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) where he is briefed on matters of state and policy.

On 26 August 2003, Kedah mourmed the demise of Her Royal
Highness Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah. Her Royal Highness had endeared herself to the people of Kedah with Her beauty, grave, elegance and compassion. May Allah grant Her eternal peace and May Her Soul be placed amongst the pious and chosen beleivers.

On 9 January 2004, in a glorious ceremony, Che Puan Hajjah Haminah Binti Haji Hamidun was proclaimed the Sultanah of Kedah and given the title of Her Royal Highness Tuanku Sultanah. Her Royal Highness Tuanku Sultanah Haminah born in Bagan Serai, Perak Darul Ridzuan married His Royal Highness on 25 December 1975. The Proclaimation ceremony was gladly and joyously received by all the people in Kedah. Her Royal Highness is widely famed as highly courteous, well-mannered and concerned about the welfare of the people in Kedah. Her Royal Highness is a keen golfer. This sport matches excellently with His Royal Highness, who also loved to play tennis and billiards during his younger days. Apart from His Royal Highness’ love for sports, he is also a keen photographer and traveller.

His Royal Highness has always shown passion in rearing animals and housed them at the Istana Anak Bukit. There is a large collection of tropical birds such as parrots and peacocks, as well as other animals that include exotic fish, deer, primates and horses on the palace grounds. His Royal Highness visits the gardens on a daily basis and takes meticulous care over the health of all the animals. His Royal Highness possesses a love for nature and frequently focuses his attention towards the preservation of flora and fauna in the palace grounds.

On 7 April 1994, His Royal Highness was officially conferred as Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia and the conferment remains until today. His Royal Highness is also the Royal Patron of many associations and nongovernmental organization in Kedah. His Royal Highness has visited many rural areas in the states to personally witness and hear any issues concerning his subjects. His Royal Highness is regarded as a People’s Sultan. It is with these noble qualities that His Royal Highness is loved and respected by all his subjects.

On 15 July 1983, the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the 25 years’ reign of His Royal Highness Tuanku Sultan Haji Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah was held. His Royal Highness Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman have reigned Kedah for 50 years in 2008. In conjunction with His Royal Highness’ 50 Year reign, the Golden Jubilee of His Royal Highness Tuanku Sultan was duly celebrated on 15 July 2008.
